Skoda logo, Skoda emblem
ŠKODA began its history from the company Slavia, belonging to the Czechs Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement. At that time, since 1895, they were producing bicycles and motorcycles, and used first logo – a bicycle wheel, decorated with lime leaves with «Slavia» inscription in the center.
Soon the company was renamed in honor of its respective owners – «Laurin & Klement», and the initial letters of their names on a red background became the basis for a new logo, presented in 1905. This emblem adorned with a laurel wreath, was made in the popular at that time “modern” style. There are also versions of the appearance of the laurel wreath on the logo. According to one of them the author was Václav Klement himself and that he wanted to focus on the fame of the brand and its leadership. According to the second version, the laurels appeared due to his partner’s name: «Laurin» in tune with the English «laurel» and Latin «laurus nobilis».
In 1925 «Laurin & Klement» unified with the company «Pilsen ŠKODA», named in honor of its founder – Emil Ritter von Škoda. Emil started in 1860s from the forge and at the beginning of the 20s he produced a variety of products for mechanical engineering. It was after the merger of the two companies when the first ŠKODA car appeared and a new logo – a blue oval with «Škoda» inscription and decorated with the same laurel wreath.
Prior to the merger, in 1915-1923, the Company «Pilsen ŠKODA» used as a logo stylized portrait of Indian in profile. He was wearing a traditional headdress with five feathers and hoop on the temple. That time the word “Indian” also meant a new symbol. It is believed that the author of this logo is the commercial director of ŠKODA – Mr. Maglic. He was inspired by the appearance of one of the Škoda family servants, which Emil had brought back from a trip to America. In another version, the design was the product of the competition program, organized by the Technical Director of ŠKODA in Prague, Dr. Sikora. But the author’s name remains unknown.
In 1923 the company «Pilsen ŠKODA» has got a new logo, or rather two logos: the first was a picture of an arrow with five feathers, and the second – with three. Although officially in the logo is depicted an arrow wing with an eye, but schematically, it resembles the profile of an Indian. The first option, which also had the inscription «ŠKODA» depicted inside the circle, lasted only two years, and the second option in a slightly modified form, we can see on modern cars.
Each element of the logo is “not accidental”, it has its logical explanation:
arrow – a symbol of the company’s rapid growth and productivity;
wing – “swing” of the company on a global level, as well as technological progress, as according to another version the wing is seen as a gear;
a large circle – universality of production and perfection of products;
eye symbolizes the accuracy and broad-mind.
In 1994, the ŠKODA logo has changed significantly. Arrow with a pen is now depicted in green to symbolize the unity with nature, environmental protection and safety production. A circle became black and designated old traditions of the company. Over and under the emblem the inscriptions «ŠKODA» and «AUTO» were added.
Also in 1994, a special logo for Skoda Felicia model was released. On it, instead of inscription «AUTO» there was depicted green laurel wreath as a sign of tradition. And in 1995 an anniversary logo was released to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the company – the inscription 100 YEARS was placed instead of “Indian”, and in addition to the traditional “ŠKODA» and «AUTO» were added laurel leafs.
In 2011 there is a new logo with light padding. Most global changes occurred to the main part of the logo – a winged arrow, which became bigger and more noticeable. It was repainted from the “natural green” to the new corporate color saturated «ŠKODA Green». The outer edge received chrome edging.
The black ring, framing the winged arrow has changed its color to a simple chrome design and was placed further from the arrow, giving the logo a feeling of lightness and sense of purpose. There is no inscription «AUTO» in the circle, now the word «ŠKODA» stands out more clearly over the logo. New colors, new proportions and new arrangement really refreshed logo, but it is used only in a monochrome format in cars.
