At the beginning of its history, in the 1900s, the company «Toyota» had nothing to do with cars and was called differently – «Toyoda» (Toyoda Automatic Loom Works), by the name of its founder, the Japanese Kiichiro Toyoda, which was producing automatic looms. The logo of the company included the name «TOYODA» written in roman-ji, which is the Japanese word in the Roman alphabet, which at that time was pretty brave.
Kiichiro started to develop cars in 1933, and in 1937 the first logo appeared. A special competition was organized and more than twenty thousand options were considered. The winner was the emblem, depicting the name of «Toyota» in Japanese katakana syllabary – «ト ヨ タ». It was believed that such writing gives a sense of speed to the logo.
The «D» letter in the company name was changed to «t» and there are several reasons for this. First, from an aesthetic point of view it was easier to pronounce «Toyota» and it had more beautiful look. Secondly, Kiichiro business “separated” from family life after that. Thirdly, and this is considered the main reason, the letter has been replaced to achieve the number of lines for writing word in katakana equal to eight. That is supposed to be «da – ダ», with two strokes above the syllable «ta – タ», which was removed. Numerology is very important for the Japanese, and 8 is a lucky number, which brings good luck and prosperity, which is what happened with the company.
When Toyota began selling cars in other countries, there was a need for a new logo, which appeared in 1989. It is said that the logo looks like a cowboy in a big hat, while others believe that it is a needle with threaded through the eye of a thread or two woven knit loops, as a tribute to the memory of the first product, but in fact, according to the official version, the logo «Toyota» consists of the three ellipses (ovals). The smallest of them (in the middle) symbolizes the customer’s heart, horizontal – “the heart of the company.” While intersecting ovals form the letter “T” – the capital letter of the brand name. The largest ellipse symbolizes the union, the development of technology, innovation in production.
In the logo, in the intersection of ovals, you can also see the full name of the company, all of the letters – T, O, Y, O, T, A.
In 2004, the logo was modernized, it became more voluminous, and red was changed to plating, so that it corresponds to what is depicted directly on the hood of the car.
In 2005, after the release of the new model Toyota AYGO, the logo proportions were slightly changed and the color became deeper.
